I've been patronising the local nail salon for the past few years. I even know the names of the owner and a couple of the workers and wave hi to them whenever I just pass by.
Today, I came home early enough to pick up Eh and go for a mommy-and-me manicures. While in there, I decided to 'shape' my eyebrows as well. And right before my turn some teenage Jewish girl (or was she possibly in her 20s) paid $14 worth of services with a credit card. The owner made a big deal about that transaction -'we get 85c from dollar, next time bring cash', etc.
I thought that in such cases she shouldn't accept credit cards and followed one of the 'cosmetologists' to the back to get my eyebrows done. A couple of minutes later, apparently as soon as the credit-card-paying-girl walked out, the owner said "$14 pay with credit card, less tip. should bring cash. Jewish!" and some patron (later observed to be of African descent) responded " yea, that's how they get rich..." The conversation continued in the same tones for a few minutes.
I asked the cosmetologist taking care of my eyebrows, who also serviced the credit-card-paying-girl, if she wasn't tipped by the girl. And unless I grossly misunderstood the thick accent, she was tipped, from the same credit card. I also mentioned to her that the conversation in the front 'was not nice'. To her credit, the cosmetologist looked embarrassed.
As soon as I was released from the eyebrow shaping, I took my kid by the hand (who the whole time patiently waited to have to nails polished), paid for my eyebrows in cash ( leaving a cash tip for self and the kid before me), said that I no longer wish to paint mine or my daughter's nails in that place, explained to the owner in one G-rated sentence why I was leaving, and left.
I learned from a very young age that my nation is not a popular one. But until today, I still cannot believe the extent of stupidity of those displaying their dislike of my people...
Politics is not the point

Good for you! If they were any smarter, they would know that keeping their mouth shut is better for business. Thank G-d for making antisemites mostly dumb.
Im not going to give you the "we live in galus" reason, or the "Esav hates yakkov" one either. I think that people should be more considerate when it comes to tipping, or at least give one altogether, I can understand why people get pissed off about not getting tipped.
MiM, that was not just a tip discussion (plus, the woman was tipped). If you do not want to take credit cards, or want tips in cash only, advertise as such. If you do not, respect your costumers and take their blessed cards!
If you are not happy with your Jewish costumers, do not set up shop in a Jewish neighbourhood. Or at least do not engage in idiotic discussions gravitating towards the usual stereotypes while your Jewish costumers are in the back!
Plus, we are in galut, Esav does hate us, but to the best of my knowledge, Africans are descendats of Cham, and I have no idea who Koreans come from. I am well aware that our people are not always the best-behaved, but our haters do no need an excuse. And we definately do not get rich from using credit cards instead of cash.
The only way they could be paying 15% per transaction is if they went to their own people who screwed them, instead of getting a reputable service online.
Even if they are paying 15%, it's still business. I, for one, don't use cash at all because of the 3% back I get from my card.
At THAT's, Moshe, how you (and I and the rest of our people) get rich. Those 3%...
Oh and you know how I am getting rich? By not getting my nails done in a salon. I must be rolling in dough.
I get a haircut once in 2~3 months. How do I know when it's time for a haircut/beard trim? When people start throwing loose change into my coffee cup.
It's time to cut kids' nails when you notice blood on them, not their own blood.
It's time to cut your nails when you stop using a knife when cooking meat/poultry.
Subwife - I agree. Any businessman with half a brain would think before speaking.
Mike - this was not about tipping per se. Read the post again or ask for clarification if I didn't express myself well. Sometimes people just don't have cash on them...
Barb - thanks for an educated summary.
Moshe - I stopped getting haircuts altogether after I bought a precut wig.
it sounds a lot like the place i go to... i wonder if its the same one!
it's so sad when people discriminate. hate is so ugly.
